Functional Jaw Orthopedics

Ankara Diş Fonksiyonel Çene Ortopedisi

Functional jaw orthopedics is an orthodontic treatment method applied during the growth and development period to ensure balanced development of the jaw structure in children. During this process, specially designed functional appliances are used to control the growth direction and speed of the upper and lower jaws.

How Do Functional Appliances Work?

Functional appliances use mechanical forces to guide the development of the jawbones. During treatment planning, a personalized approach is developed based on the patient’s age, existing jaw relationships, and growth direction. The type of appliance to be used is determined according to this plan.

Types of Functional Appliances

Functional appliances are divided into two main categories:

Removable Functional Appliances

These can be applied intraorally and/or extraorally. They can be inserted and removed by the patient.

Advantages: Easier to maintain oral hygiene and clean.

Disadvantages: Success largely depends on the patient’s consistency in using the appliance. Proper storage of the appliance is also important.

Fixed Functional Appliances

These are attached to the mouth by the dentist and cannot be removed by the patient.

Advantages: Less reliance on patient compliance, continuous therapeutic effect.

Considerations: Oral and appliance hygiene must be carefully maintained. Damage to the appliance may negatively affect the treatment process.

What Is the Purpose of Functional Jaw Treatment?

  • To correct lower and upper jaw discrepancies during the growth period

  • To prevent the progression of orthodontic disorders

  • To help teeth align in a healthier and more balanced manner

  • To resolve skeletal problems before they persist into adulthood

Who Are Suitable Candidates for Functional Jaw Orthopedics?

This treatment is generally suitable for:

  • Children aged between 7 and 14

  • Individuals with underdeveloped or overdeveloped jaws

  • Patients experiencing mismatched upper and lower jaw relationships

With proper timing, this treatment can eliminate the need for surgical intervention in later years.
